High-brightness display line-up for outdoor use

Sharp has extended its industrial display portfolio with two high-brightness models with 19-inch (48 cm) and 23-inch (59 cm) diagonal screens, LED backlighting, and a service life of up to 50,000 hours

Hamburg, 1st March 2011 - Displays for total or partial outside use must be of a high standard. Above all, this includes robustness, resilience to temperature changes and adaptability to changing light conditions. With its industrial grade high‑brightness displays with LED backlighting, Sharp offers TFT-LCDs ideal for outdoor and semi-outdoor use.
A new addition is the LQ190E1LX51 type 19-inch SXGA display that provides a brightness of up to 1,000 cd/m² with a contrast ratio of 900:1 and a viewing angle of 170°. In addition to traditional industrial applications, it is perfect for use in e‑kiosks, which are now often used in semi-outdoor areas as well as in areas that are completely outdoors.
New as well is the LQ231U1LW31 type 23-inch UXGA display with a brightness of up to 500 cd/m², a contrast ratio of 600:1 and also a viewing angle of 170°. It is already used, for example, in nautical chart reading tables on ships. The increased importance of dimming is clear in this case. On the ship's bridge in the daytime, optimal readability of the display must be ensured even in direct sunlight, while at night the backlight must be dimmed to ensure that the chart table does not dazzle in the dark and does not cause reflections in the front pane of the display.
The LQ121X3LG02 type 12.1-inch XGA display that Sharp introduced in the middle of last year is distinguished by a display brightness of up to 1,200 cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1.
All high-brightness displays have LED backlighting which, in contrast to displays with CCFL backlights, offers numerous advantages. These include extremely fast responses and excellent dimmability of LEDs. The display brightness can thus be easily controlled by photodiodes and automatically adjusted, depending on the ambient light conditions; this means that the display remains constantly easy to read, even in frequently changing light conditions. The displays are also more mechanically robust, as LEDs are far less breakable than the glass bodies of cold cathode lamps. This simplifies the mechanical design and increases the load capacity.
All three display types work in a temperature range of -20 to +60 degrees Celsius and are thus equipped both for hot summer days as well as cold winter days. With a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours and long-term availability, with these displays Sharp offers its customers the best solutions for outdoor use, while they are of course also ideal for common industrial and indoor applications.

Samples of the new high-brightness displays are now available from the sales offices and European distribution partners of Sharp.
