Less is more - new Sharp DVB-S2 NIM tuner only uses 1.5 watt

Power consumption of the new DVB-S2 NIM tuner is reduced by around 50 per cent compared to its predecessor

Hamburg, 19 May 2008 – Right on time for the ‘Anga Cable’ Sharp is expanding its product portfolio of its Network Interfaced Module (NIM) tuners for the digital reception of High-Definition TV via satellite with a particularly power-saving model. The new DVB-S2 NIM tuner type BS2F7HZ0167 is content with a power input of, typically, around 1.5 watt, which is a good 50 per cent below the power consumption of its predecessor (BS2F7HZ0164).

The new addition to the DVB-S2 tuner family has an identical casing to the existing DVB-S2 NIM tuner and is, for this reason, completely hardware-compatible in mechanical terms. In addition, the BS2F7HZ0167 completely encompasses the typical satellite reception frequency field of between 950 and 2150 MHz and is suitable for the reception of HDTV signals in the DVB-S2 standard as well as for standard DVB-S signals. Like all tuner components from Sharp, the BS2F7HZ0167 distinguishes itself by virtue of technical parameters which are significantly better than the standards actually required. The noise figure (NF) here is around a mere 6dB (typically) and the phase noise is only around -80dBc/Hz (typically) at 10 kHz offset. And when it comes to signal input sensitivity, dynamics and definition the new DVB-S2 NIM Tuner performs at well above average levels.

The NIM demodulator unit of the BS2F7HZ0167 is fitted with the latest chip from ST Microelectronics – the STV0903 model. This provides an 8PSK / QPSK demodulation and delivers a digital 8-bit data-stream for further signal processing.

If anyone really fancies taking the development of the receiver into his/her own hands by using a separate demodulator then they will still not need to say goodbye to the latest thing in modern HDTV satellite reception technology from Sharp. With the models BS2S7VZ0604 and BS2S7HZ0604 the Japanese corporation also supplies the new DVB-S2 tuner as pure RF frontends for upright or flat-lying mounting. They too have the same degree of high-quality reception characteristics as the newly introduced DVB-S2 tuners. There is only Sharp technology in these so-called RF-only tuners, with the company‘s own, excellent RF IC.

Sharp has at its fingertips a rich and extensive pool of know-how in the development and manufacture of receiver components. Sharp was one of the first manufacturers to launch onto the European market in 2005 a DVB-S2 tuner for the reception of HDTV signals by satellite. With an extremely broad product portfolio of more than 40 different tuners for digital TV reception via satellite, cable and terrestrial transmission, the company provides a suitable solution for virtually any application.
