Sharp Microelectronics Presents Transflective 6.5 and 8.8 inch Automobile Displays with Super Mobile Technology
Automobile LCDs function reliably despite difficult lighting conditions, temperature extremes and jolts
Hamburg, September 5, 2005 – The line of LCD products from Sharp Microelectronics Europe grows: Samples of the 6.5 inch LQ065T9DZ01 and the 8.8 inch LQ088H9DZ01 TFT displays are now available on the European market. Equipped with Sharp developments such as Super Mobile Technology, they guarantee a constantly high image quality and a wide viewing angle despite changing brightness levels in the environment. In addition, the new displays are extremely temperature resistant. These qualities make the TFTs ideal for use in automobile applications such as navigation and entertainment systems, as well as in many industrial environments.
Super Mobile Technology combines the advantages of a high reflection TFT with the performance of a back-lit transmissive TFT. This means that these transflective LCDs always guarantee good display readability. A high-quality anti-reflection coating also minimizes disturbing reflections on the surface of the glass. Even if the navigation display is viewed from the side by the driver and passenger, the new displays deliver sharp images: The Mobile ASV Technology increases the viewing angle to up to 160 degrees, without the image reversing into a negative image. The new TFTs offer a “wide-screen” picture format of 16:9 or 8:3 with (400 x RBG) x 240 or (640 x RGB) x 240 pixels and have a 262,144 color display.
The 6.5 and 8.8 inch TFTs are extremely resistant to heat and cold. A vehicle that stands for a long time in strong direct sunlight can heat up to 70 degrees Celsius. That is no problem for the new displays: In the off mode they can withstand temperatures from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. The working temperature range lies between -30 and +85 degrees Celsius. This is also an advantage in the industrial sector, where displays are often exposed to heat. Thanks to the “self-heating backlights“, the new TFTs rapidly reach their maximum brightness after a “cold start” at temperatures below zero degrees. The new modules are especially insensitive to jolts and vibrations due to the chip-on-glass technology – another important aspect for the trouble-free use of TFTs in automobiles or in mobile industrial machines.
